Set in the Tang Dynasty, the drama tells the lives of ordinary people during that time period.
Sheng Chu Mu was the son of one of the founding marshals of the Tang Empire. He was a playful and wayward man but his life took a radical turn when he fell in love at first sight with Fu Rou - the diligent daughter from a merchant family. In order to woo Fu Rou's heart, Chu Mu began to study earnestly. As he grow in knowledge and maturity, he decided to follow in his father's footsteps to serve the country and planned a campaign against pirates harassing the coast of China.

The eldest son of Sheng Xiao Jing - Sheng Chu Mu was loved by his mother since birth and was the first of the dandies in Chang'an City. In Guangzhou City, he fell in love at first sight with a merchant's daughter, Fu Rou. In order to upskill and stand out, he decided to learn military art from his uncle. After completing his training, he thought he could finally get what he wanted. However, fate was not on his side, his family objected to this arrangement and with an imperial edict, he was forced to be separated from Fu Rou.

When he travelled to the prosperous country, he repeatedly made remarkable achievement but was almost killed by the Lu family. Due to his many achievements including the rescue of the Emperor and Empress, elimination of side troubles, capture of Prince Zhao and the escort of Prince Han, Sheng Chu Mu won the Emperor's trust and was ordered to establish a hundred cavalry army. Due to the tragic deaths of Chu Jun and Lian Yan'er, it was discovered that all the incidents were conspired. Under the edict of His Majesty and in a critical moment, he was allowed to bring soldiers into the palace to rescue Fu Rou. After many more twists and turns, he finally embraced his lover and became a resourceful young General.

Fu Rou
The daughter of a merchant and the second Lady of the Fu family. She is a very skilled embroiderer and manages the embroidery and dyeing room at her residence. Due to her highly skilled embroidery skill, she was summoned into the palace by the Queen to be a female officer. Fu Rou is intelligent and amazing with her words thus, she is highly regarded by the Queen. She was dismissed from office for preventing the Queen from granting the death of Princess Han. The Empress left a note before her death where Fu Rou was to be demoted to a handyman and then appointed to the Shang Palace in hope that she could save the Princes.

After the death of the Empress, she tried her best to ensure the peace of the harem and tried to send them out of the palace in order to prevent Prince Qin, Consort Zhen and others from being harmed.

After the changes within the palace walls, Fu Rou was chartered for meritorious service and she was granted the permission to marry Sheng Chu Mu because of her merits.

Emperor Li Shi Min
The son of the Taishang Emperor, the second Emperor of the Tang Dynasty. He was a wise Emperor who created the "Rule of Zhenguan". He loves all his Princes and Princesses, especially the Princes, but he never thought that Prince Zhao would start a rebellion which caused the brothers to fight among one another. It is inevitable that there will be another confrontation between the sons and the heir.
When Prince Qin was sent out of the palace (to the temple) to avoid misfortune and when he was about to order Prince Zhou to return to Zhou City, he suddenly fell ill. This caused Consort Yan, Yuhe and others to take over the harem and interfere with the government.

Fortunately, when he suspected the cause of Du Ning's death, he secretly ordered the Sheng family and Sheng Chu Mu to station at the Jinyuan and Dacang Mountain to prevent the palace from being conquered.
Miao Pu as
Empress Chang Sun
The current Empress and one of the virtuous Queens in history. She is the mother of the Crown Prince, Prince Han and Prince Qin. She has worked hard for her children for many years which caused her depression for a long period of time. After witnessing the Crown Prince and Prince Han going for each other's throats, Empress Chang Sun was unable to recover.

Before her passing, she asked the Emperor to agree to Princess Xin Nan and Sheng Chu Ling's request. and hoped that the Emperor would save the lives of their children anyway. After her death, Fu Rou was appointed to the Shangli Bureau of the Shang Palace with the intention of containing Consort Yan and to protect the Princes.

Crown Prince
"Li Kai Qing"
The eldest son of the Imperial family and the Crown Prince. He has a good relationship with Prince Han and Princess Xin Nan. As Prince Zhou was outstanding, the Crown Prince was often jealous of him. As the Crown Prince, he has a heavy load of responsibilities on his shoulders and it's one of his few reliefs to have Situ Shangyi, Chen Ji and others.

The Empress blamed Situ Shangyi and the Emperor forced Chen Ji to death. The Crown Prince was narrow-minded and later on, was bewitched by Shui, Lu Yunji, Prince Liang and others which ultimately caused him to embark on a path of no return.

After the defeat of the East Palace, he was imprisoned in the Ministry of Internal Servants; he suffered from a head ailment and lost a part of his memory due to the poisoned water. When the change in the Palace started happening, he escaped from prison with Prince Han and guarded his father from the palace with Prince Zhou. His Majesty thought of him as his own blood and flesh, so he was spared from the death penalty and was instead sent to Jinzhou and finally left Chang'an with the Emperor's grandson.
